چکیده

The classical Bretherton problem describes the propagation of gas fingers through liquid media in a narrow channel with thin liquid films between bubbles and channel walls. The bubble shape and flow patterns are complicated functions of the capillary number Ca and Reynolds number Re. Recently, we investigated the applicability and parameter selection for the two-dimensional Bretherton problem (flow between parallel plates) using the free-energy binary liquid lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) [1]. This paper is the continuation of our previous work with simulations of three-dimensional channels with rectangular (mostly square) cross sections in the range of the capillary number 0.05 ≤ Ca ≤ 6.0. The flow is driven by a body force, and periodic boundary conditions are applied in the streamwise direction. The results show that the binary liquid model is able to correctly capture a number of phenomena occurring in three-dimensional capillaries, such as the existence of a vortex in front of the bubble and the way bubble radii depend on the capillary number. We conclude that lattice Boltzmann free energy binary liquid model can be used to simulate the Bretherton problem with good accuracy. ∗Corresponding author Email addresses: [email protected] (A. Investigation of pore-scale random porous media using lattice boltzmann method

The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...

Numerical simulation of a three-layered radiant porous heat exchanger including lattice Boltzmann simulation of fluid flow

This paper deals with the hydrodynamic and thermal analysis of a new type of porous heat exchanger (PHE). This system operates based on energy conversion between gas enthalpy and thermal radiation. The proposed PHE has one high temperature (HT) and two heat recovery (HR1 and HR2) sections. In HT section, the enthalpy of flowing high temperature gas flow that is converted to thermal radiation em...

Implementation of D3Q19 Lattice Boltzmann Method with a Curved Wall Boundary Condition for Simulation of Practical Flow Problems

In this paper, implementation of an extended form of a no-slip wall boundary condition is presented for the three-dimensional (3-D) lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for solving the incompressible fluid flows with complex geometries. The boundary condition is based on the off-lattice scheme with a polynomial interpolation which is used to reconstruct the curved or irregular wall boundary on the ne...

Lattice Boltzmann simulation of EGM and solid particle trajectory due to conjugate natural convection

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the EGM method and the behavior of a solid particle suspended in a twodimensional rectangular cavity due to conjugate natural convection. A thermal lattice Boltzmann BGK model is implemented to simulate the two dimensional natural convection and the particle phase was modeled using the Lagrangian–Lagrangian approach where the solid particles are treat...
